The Kimbell’s permanent collection is small in size, comprising fewer than 350 works of art, and distinguished by an extraordinary level of artistic quality and importance. The idea of building a choice collection of representative masterpieces was established by the Museum’s first director, Richard F. Brown, in his Policy Statement of June 1, 1966.
Leaving to older and larger institutions the role of collecting broadly and in depth, the Kimbell has continued to pursue quality over quantity.
Antiquities. The Kimbell's select holdings of antiquities range from the Egyptian Old Kingdom of the third millennium B.C., through ancient Assyria, Greece and Rome, to the Early Christian Church in the fifth century.
European Art. The collection of European paintings and sculpture is remarkably rich in works of the Italian Renaissance, although its fullest and most celebrated holdings are in Italian, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Flemish works of the 17th century.
Asian Art. The Asian collection comprises sculptures, paintings, bronzes, ceramics, and works of decorative art from China, Korea, Japan, India, Nepal, Tibet, Cambodia, and Thailand.
Precolumbian Art. Precolumbian art is represented by Maya works in ceramic, stone, shell, and jade, Olmec, Zapotec, and Aztec sculpture, as well as pieces from the Conte and Huari cultures.
African and Oceanic Art. The African collection consists primarily of bronze, wood, and terracotta sculpture from West and Central Africa, including examples from Nigeria, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Oceanic art is represented by a Maori figure.
The Kimbell offers a wide range of programs and resources to enrich the experience of our exceptional permanent collection, special exhibitions, and world-renowned building. Designed for audiences with diverse interests and learning styles, these programs seek to increase understanding and enhance appreciation of the artworks on view, as well as their historical and cultural context.
The Kimbell Art Museum provides an ongoing program of interpretive exhibitions and publications.
The Museum offers a full schedule of public programs to promote appreciation of the collection and special exhibitions, including:
- symposia featuring guest speakers;
- regular lectures and gallery talks by the professional staff, regional artists, and guest scholars;
- films on art;
- a book-discussion club;
- summer camps for children; family festivals;
- and family gallery guides.
Workshops on the arts – specially designed to share the resources of the Museum with all levels of the community – are held regularly for children, high school students, deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and adults of all ages, and are based on the principle that increased understanding is the key to an expanded enjoyment of art.
The Kimbell Art Museum has become a byword for quality and importance at the highest level.
