Located in an art moderne 1950s former department store building with a two-story expansive open gallery, the AMA is the anchor of a revitalizing downtown Arlington. The oldest art organization in Arlington, it began 45 years ago as an art association and fulfilled its dream to become a museum in 1989. The Arlington Museum of Art today: - AMA is non-collecting and free to the public. - Exhibitions receive statewide and national recognition: 18,000 visitors annually. - Education programs are built upon a direct experience of art. - A variety of free and fee-based educational programs for children, families and adults. - FW Weekly's annual Best of the Metroplex reader's poll selects the AMA as “Best Kids Art Experience”. - New adult-focused programs reach out to both young and older adult audiences. The AMA offers a variety of tours. Most tours are free. Visitors can take a self-guided tours via the handouts available at the reception desk. Self-guided tours are available in both children and adult formats. Guided tours are available with AMA staff for groups of five or larger. The AMA offers a variety of free and tuition-based programs for kids and families throughout the year. Education Programs: - Art Around the Corner. It is the largest child-based program at the AMA – a collaborative project with the Arlington Independent School District. AAC invites fifth grade students from nearby schools to tour the museum and participate in a hands-on art activity with a professional artist. Students have a fun time while learning about art and utilizing their own creativity as well. - Lectures and gallery talks. It's free to museum members and guests, and provides a great opportunity to meet artists and hear them talk about their work. - Summer Art Camp. Week-long, half-day art camps taught by professional artists and instructors. Classes, geared to each age group, offer an in-depth exploration of a variety of art mediums and approaches spanning both traditional and non-traditional methods. - Adult Art Classes. The AMA offers a variety of art classes throughout the year. Museum visitors have multiple opportunities to get involved with the Arlington Museum of Art. The AMA is a school for aspiring artists, a broad canvas for art exhibits, and a place of cultural exchange for the entire community.
