Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

 
Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum collects, exhibits and interprets the historical, ethnological, cultural, and scientific heritage of the Panhandle-Plains region of Texas and related areas of the Southwest. Our exhibits are changing constantly, and there is always something new to see. From dinosaurs to modern art, from saddles to automobiles, we have it all.

Our Exhibitons: 
- Petroleum and Transportation. The collection includes equipment and tools used to drill and maintain oil and gas wells in Texas.
- Fine Art. PPHM holds the oldest and most comprehensive public art collection in northwest Texas, numbering more than 4,000 objects.
- Firearms. The exhibit reflects the core collection of more than 1,000 pieces dating from the 15th century through the 20th century – flintlocks, revolvers, firearms curiosa, early percussion, military, sporting rifles and shotguns, and commemorative rifles. 
- Pioneer Town. The History Collection is the museum's largest.  Artifacts include a variety of items related to everyday life used at home and at work from the late 1800s through the 20th century. 
- American Indian Art. The American Indian (Ethnology) collection of the museum includes historic Indian artifacts from the Southern Plains—Comanche, Kiowa, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho—and related areas of the Southwest.
- Textiles. The collection contains more than 175 quilts of varying significance and quality, including a reverse appliqué quilt made in 1809.
- People of the Plains. See an exhibit of Euro-American and American Indian clothing. Smell the coffee at the chuck wagon exhibit.  Listen to songs from the 60s, as you sit in the seat of a 1965 Mustang.
- Natural History. The Natural History exhibit consists of animal specimens in dioramas and study specimens collected as part of specific research projects. One notable exception is the birds.
- History . The History Collection is the museum’s largest.  Artifacts include a variety of items related to everyday life used at home and at work from the late 1800s through the 20th century.
- Archeology. The Archeology collection is well-focused on prehistoric Indian artifacts of the Southern Plains.  Artifacts include material documenting 14,000 years of habitation in the Texas Panhandle.
- Paleontology & Geology. The Paleontology collection is world-class in terms of Late Triassic (225-200 million years ago) reptiles and amphibians from localities around Amarillo, and Late Cenozoic (10-1 million years ago) mammals from the Texas Panhandle.
- Decorative Arts. Temporary exhibitions use the PPHM collection or the region as a springboard, and emphasize the American West, the Southwest, and Texas before 1950.
- Sports. The intent is to collect and preserve items used or collected by Panhandle-Plains people from all genres of sports from soccer to golf and wrestling to bowling.   
Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum can offer a large variety of subjects that interest all family members. Fun is always on the agenda with programs that connect families through projects, trips, and events.
Opened in the 1960s, the library and archives store a wealth of knowledge about the Panhandle-Plains in many different formats.
The museum shop offers a unique variety of regional gifts.
