The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is located on the sixth and seventh floors of an early 20th-century warehouse known in 1963 as the Texas School Book Depository. Museum tours are self-guided.
The Sixth Floor Museum's mission is fortified through lectures, presentations, panel discussions and other public programs. Designed to be creative and engaging, these unique programs advance the Museum's commitment to community outreach, engagement and learning, and empower a diverse audience to understand how and why the past is still relevant.
The memorial is a square, roofless room, 30 feet high and 50-feet-by-50-feet wide. Visitors enter the room after a short walk up a slight concrete incline that is embossed with concrete squares. Once inside, visitors see a low-hewn granite square in which John Fitzgerald Kennedy's name is carved. The letters have been painted gold to capture the light from the “floating” white column walls and the pale concrete floor. These words are the only ones in the empty room.
A diverse, actively growing collection of approximately 35,000 items, the Museum Collection is one of the world's largest and most important sources of visual, audio, documentary and artifactual documentation of the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy.
Individual audio guides are available in seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. A youth version is available in English.
The Museum actively strives to further develop its collections and related research materials for study and interpretation. Together, the collections provide a foundation for the Museum's educational and public programming, as well as its exhibitions.
A group is considered to be 20 or more people. Tour company escorts and drivers are always admitted free of charge, regardless of the group size.
Our education efforts advance the Museum's commitment to outreach, engagement and learning by a diverse public, and fulfill a responsibility to empower students, teachers and other audiences to understand how and why the past is still relevant. Teachers may access lesson plans and other resources. The Sixth Floor Museum has exceptional resources for teachers, including an e-newsletter and books, posters and DVDs available for loan. The Museum's galleries provide a unique historic location for your next teacher in-service meeting.
A classroom visit to The Sixth Floor Museum brings American history to life in real and exciting ways. Each student receives a thoughtful audio tour that uses music and memories of the 1960s to bring the story alive. Arranging a visit is fast and easy.
The Museum is accessible to wheelchair users and others with special needs.
The Sixth Floor Museum Store offers books, video, posters & prints, cloth items.
