White Rock Montessori School
White Rock Montessori is dedicated to providing a challenging educational environment in which each child is empowered to grow to his/her fullest potential academically, emotionally, physically and socially at each stage of development. Following the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori, the school provides a consistent framework for learning through the dynamic partnership of child, parent and teacher. White Rock Montessori students develop a deep sense of personal and social responsibility and respect for themselves, others and the environment. Preschool: Maria Montessori called the period between birth and age 6 the First Plane of development. She characterized children of this age as having an "absorbent mind," the ability to literally absorb, like a sponge, all kinds of information about their environment and culture. The preschool child's need for order and independence is reflected in the highly organized and child-proportioned nature of the preschool environment. Lessons are given to the children one-on-one. Teachers are careful to match the activity to the child's "sensitive period" for that particular aspect of learning. Elementary School: The elementary child is characterized by the "reasoning mind." Children of this age have a natural curiosity about how things work. They are highly social and want to understand the relationship between both things and people. In answer to these characteristics, lessons are given to small groups of children with the purpose of sparking their imagination and sense of wonder, helping them understand the universe around them and their place in it, and taking advantage of their natural inclination toward collaborative learning.
